I discovered the lush Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta agricultural region and the city of Brentwood over twenty years ago. There were many farms in Brentwood then, before several were converted into large tract home developments. This area has had a rich agricultural heritage going back to the early 1900’s with major crops like cherries, corn and peaches. Sadly, many farms are disappearing and many families have tired of farming decided to move on.
This isn’t the case with Smith Family Farm that has followed a tradition of farming that stretches back over a century and across continents. Descending from Spanish tomato farmers and Ohioan corn growers, current owners and siblings Janice, Ken, Bill and Shirley opened Smith Family Farm for business in the late 1970’s. Since then, thousands of families have visited the farm and experienced their unique, old-fashioned take on fruits and vegetables, while countless others around the Bay Area have flocked to local farmers’ markets and Michelin starred restaurants for their famous selection of heirloom tomatoes.
Other members of the Smith family include: Betty, their mother, Janice’s son Nic, and their cousin Robin Pastor. Betty entertains children during the Fall and Spring seasons while Nic and Robin work at the fruit stand and sell produce at local farmers’ markets. Most of the employees at the farm are family friends and cousins.
While the farm gets its name from the family that founded it, the families that come here year-round to enjoy quality produce and old-fashioned fun are equally vital to the farm. Smith Family Farm is a farm for the whole family. My own family adopted Smith Family Farm as our family farm over twenty years ago and we continue to make the trip out to Brentwood every two weeks from May to September to harvest our own produce for use at home and to share with friends and neighbors.
