I Scream, You Scream we all Scream for ICE CREAM

Can you believe the abundance of absolutely incredible ice cream places we have right in the neighborhoods here in the bay area? I am a little hesitant to say it, but we are blessed with some of the best ice creams in the world. By now most are aware that the bay area and the rest of the country is experiencing an ice cream renaissance with new producers popping up all over the place with rich new flavors created with the best locally sourced ingredients. They're even making their own signature toppings to round out the perfect scoop.

There's Humphry Slocombe on the corner of Harrison and 24th Street in the Mission with mesmerizing flavors like Cinnamon Brittle, Milk Chocolate Passion Fruit and Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee. Plus those out of this universe flavors like Jesus Juice, Secret Breakfast and Strawberry Candied Jalapeno. They make their own Bourbon Caramel Sauce and you can choose to gild their perfect flavors with Amarena Cherries, Hot Fudge Sauce, Butterscotch Sauce, Frosted Peanuts, Fluff, Almond Crunch or 20 Year Old Balsamic Vinegar.

Then theres Bi-Rite Creamery on the corner of 18th Street and Delores near Delores Park. Now a hallowed ice cream institution. They make probably my favorite concoction yet; Sam's Sundae (pictured above) which is composed of two scoops of their dense, deep, delicious, dark chocolate ice cream gilded with a tablespoon of Bergamot Olive Oil and then anointed with a sprinkling of Maldon Sea Salt Crystals and a dollop of whipped cream. Bi-Rite has a cornucopia of irresistible flavors like Honey Lavender and Salt Caramel that should not be missed. Bi-Rite has just recently added a soft serve option as well and then they have some really exceptional baked goods to go with your sublime distraction.

Don't forget the hallowed Mitchell's Ice Cream located at San Jose (Guerrero Street) and 29th Street since 1953. Famous for their array of signature flavors like Chocolate Caramel Crackle, Lilikoi Mango Swirl and New York Cherry plus a whole myriad of tropical flavors like Ube (Purple Yam), Macapuno (Sweet Young Coconut) and Langka (Jackfruit).
Mitchell's is truly a San Francisco treat that cannot be missed.

Get out there no matter what the weather and try these ice creams, they'll make you happy.

Pomelo

The pomelo looks like a grapefruit except much larger and has thicker skin. The pomelo can range from green to yellow in skin color and grows in California, Florida and much of Asia. Fruit can easily be two pounds. To prepare remove the very thick skin like an orange and remove as much white pith as possible getting down to the actual citrus sections. Separate in half and then begin to remove each section and peel the membrane from each section. Pomelos come in two colors; white and pink. The texture is much like a grapefruit yet larger dryer pulp which is easy to eat once peeled and lends well to salads if the pulp is pulled apart into smaller pieces. The flavor is very unique and sweet without the familiar bitterness found in grapefruit. The season in North America ranges from November to March.

Rambutan

The rambutan hails from tropical climates from Mexico to Asia and many points in between. One of the most striking looking fruits. Similar to the Lychee except with a thicker shell covered with hairs of red tipped with green. To enjoy, press your thumb nail into the shell half way around the center of the fruit and break the shell apart to expose the fruit that resembles a large peeled grape. It's taste resembles a combination of a grape and a pineapple. There is a center pit which is edible when roasted and tastes like an almond.

Durian

The Durian is an unlikely food both to look at and then to smell. It has sharp points all over its exterior shell. Once you get the shell open there are several lobes of butter colored flesh wrapped around large brown pits. Once open you immediately notice a very pungent smell that is somewhat off-putting. In Singapore and Malaysia you actually see no Durian signs on public transportation, right next to the sign that prohibits public displays of affection. Strange because the Durian is a very romantic fruit, when you think that you have to work so hard to access it’s potent smelling treasure. The pulp is reminiscent of custard and is sweet and delicious. This fruit is often made into ice cream. Rumor has it a better smelling variety is in the works.
