Smith Family Farm http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2014/06/24/smith-family-farm/ http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2014/06/24/smith-family-farm/#respond Tue, 24 Jun 2014 07:46:16 +0000 https://thecertifiablefoodie.com/?p=2738 I discovered the lush Sacramento and San Joaquin River Delta agricultural region and the city of Brentwood over twenty years ago. There were many farms in Bentwood then, before several were converted into large tract home developments. This area has had a rich agricultural heritage going back to the early 1900’s with major crops like cherries, corn and peaches. Sadly, many farms are disappearing and many families have tired of farming decided to move on.

Georgia O’Keefe’s Alligator Pears http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2014/04/24/georgia-okeefes-alligator-pears/ http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2014/04/24/georgia-okeefes-alligator-pears/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2014 23:02:22 +0000 https://thecertifiablefoodie.com/?p=2637 You're in for a sweet treat at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, Georgia O'Keefe at Lake George exhibit thru May 11, 2014.

From magnified botanical compositions to panoramic landscapes, the works in this exhibition offer a deeper understanding of the spirit of place that was essential to O'Keeffe's artistic evolution.

From 1918 until the early 1930s, Georgia O’Keeffe retreated annually to Alfred Stieglitz’s family estate on Lake George in upstate New York, where she reveled in the discovery of new subject matter and found respite in the rural setting without the distractions of city life. O’Keeffe’s experiences there inspired one of the most transformative and productive periods of her career, energizing the development of her signature modernist style.

The term Alligator Pear came from the shape of the fruit resembling a pear and the Mexican Aguacate, French Advocaat, Portuguese Abacate and Dutch Avocatpeer.

Suisun Valley http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2011/09/10/suisun-valley-2/ http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2011/09/10/suisun-valley-2/#comments Sun, 11 Sep 2011 02:00:00 +0000 http://thecertifiablefoodie.com/2011/09/10/suisun-valley-2       Suisun Valley, who ever heard of such a place?  Where is that?  Why bother you ask.   Just a mere hour drive from the San Francisco Bay lies a valley steeped in rich agricultural legacy.   I’ve been visiting Suisun (pronounced Sassoon like Vidal) for the past 15 years. My parents lived at Red Top Dairy for a few years and they introduced me to the wonders of this relatively undiscovered valley of abbondanza. Suisun has a rich history of wine production since the 1850’s as well as a number of tree crops (pears, prunes, peaches, kiwis, apricots and citrus).    I’ve been harvesting fresh produce from the farms in the Suisun Valley and have always been amazed at the quality of the produce and how little is known about the hard working families that have coaxed some of the most delicious produce from it’s fertile soil.   Early on I had the good fortune to meet Suzie Parker of Parker Farms who was growing about 20 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, a few types of cucumbers, a rainbow of peppers ranging from sweet to screaming flames, corn, jujube’s and one of the best selections of fresh herbs
