A Taste of Puerto Rico in Marin
I’ve been a regular at Sol Food, Puerto Rican Cuisine. I regularly make the trip across the Golden Gate for a taste of Caribe.
Sol Food has four distinct dining venues: The “Big Place” at 901 Lincoln Avenue has a bustling family style dining room straight-out of old San Juan. Don’t be intimidated by the line out the door. The line moves quickly and magically when your meal is delivered you have a place to sit whether at a communal table or the bar. Just next-door is the newly launched “La Bodega” where you can order most things on the menu for take out. Then right around the corner at 811 4th Street is the charming store front of “Small Place” where you place your order then walk out back to the charming garden terrace where you’re order is delivered. In February 2013, Sol Food opened their latest outpost in Mill Valley at 401 Miller Avenue.
Partner a plate of Pollo Al Horno (oven roasted boneless chicken thighs with Maduros (sweet plantains) and Habichuelas Rosadas, (pink beans slow cooked with potatoes and Spanish Olives over rice) next to a lightly dressed bunch of fresh jewel lettuces and you’ve got a slice of Caribe right here in Marin County. Don’t forget to sample the The Ponche (mango ice tea with lime-aide).
I’ve been making the pilgrimage to Sol Food for a few years now. I loved the original cozy tropical corner spot on 4th and Lincoln with six tables outside and inside a bar and two to three cozy tables. Sol serves breakfast all day with the likes of fried egg, ham and cheese on French bread paired with a coconut latte. Check out the daily specials like Pescado Frito (whole fried tilapia) with rice and beans and a salad or Pollito Guisado (marinated and Stewed Cornish Game Hen) with rice and beans.
Make sure to try the two yummy plantain preparations, Maduros (sweet, fried yellow plantains) and Tostones (smashed, green fried plantains served lacquered with garlic and olive oil). Those sweet, caramelized Maduros are such satisfying comfort food.
If you’re technologically savvy and have a smart-phone, Sol Food has an application with full menu. Order ahead for pick up or home delivery.
Delicious food, generous portions, reasonable prices all wrapped up in that Puerto Rican carino.
